In this post & video we introduce the concepts of characteristics and Characteristics Profile which is an important functionality to create variant articles. E.g Let us take a standard example of a Shirt. In the apparel store shelf, you can find the shirt in different sizes (S,M,L) and colours. Technically speaking it is the same article (shirt) but differs only in the attributes - Size and/or Colour. These attributes are called as Characteristics in SAP IS-Retail. The advantage is that you need not create individual articles for each "variant". You can create a Generic article and the system will automatically create the variants based on the characteristics.

Welcome to one more error fixing post :-D It happens that we might have created an article with a certain Article Type and want to change it later for some reasons. E.g when I started configuring the scenario in the IDES system, I created many articles with material type HAWA. But later I created my own article type WRTR - Woolworths Trading Goods. So I wanted to transfer all my earlier created articles of type HAWA to my newly created WRTR. This is a simple activity in SAP Materials Management.

Article types group together articles with the same attributes. When you create an article master record, you must assign it to a single article type. The article type you choose determines:

  • Whether the article number can be assigned internally by the system or externally by the user

  • Number range interval to which the article number belongs

  • Whether the stocks are managed on a value basis and/or on a quantity basis

  • User departments whose data you can maintain for articles of this article type
